Fayette's Grand Central Hall 2011.04.27
Ever hear of Fayette’s Grand Central Hall? Maybe a story was passed down by your great-great-grandfather who met his future bride on the dance floor. That’s what Jean Durham of Fayette is hoping for because at this point she’s been unable to find any clues about where the ballroom was located.
Her son-in-law found an advertising card to an event at the Grand Central. He was remodeling a house on Fayette’s Grove Street and found the card in the wall. Portions of the printing have worn off, including part of the date, but when held at an angle, it looks like 1885.
The date of the Anniversary Ball appears to have been July 2, 1885. Guests were invited to bring along their ladies and dance to the music provided by Skutt’s Fourth of July Band.
The cost of the evening entertainment, including dinner, was $2.25, which must have been a pretty good investment in 1885.
Fayette once had a Central Hotel. Was this the location of the Grand Central?
