Morenci bridge walk is Monday 8.27
Have a few seconds to spare Monday morning?
Then head to Morenci’s historic pedestrian bridge at 11 a.m. for the 14th annual Labor Day event—the Silver Creek Bridge Walk.
It takes less than half a minute to walk the bridge, but walkers are also invited to loop around and cross the other historic bridge on the site—the Van Wagoner Bridge that was once part of the Michigan-to-Florida tourist route known as the Taft Highway.
Although the walk is short, the program takes a little more time when guest dignitaries and political candidates are allowed one minute each at the microphone.
Morenci Area Chamber of Commerce vice president Kyle Griffith sent out invitations from the top to the bottom, including both presidential campaigns.
Does Barack Obama need a Michigan stop following the convention? Might John McCain visit the town before his convention gets underway?
Probably not, admits Griffith, but you never know who might show up.
Walkers should meet on the south side of green pedestrian bridge near Morenci’s industrial park. Those who drive to the event can park along Skyline Drive—the park road where the old drive-in theatre once stood.
Get ready for the event by buying a commemorative T-shirt at Stair Public Library, Johnson’s Hardware or United Bank and Trust. Shirts will also be available at the bridge.
Unlike the Labor Day walk to the north over the Straits of Mackinac, this bridge measures only 83 feet. It’s been a dry summer so water depth will be measured in inches, and not too many of them.
Short, quick and shallow. Don’t miss it.
