Morenci fire department to visit elementary school 09.29.2010
Morenci Elementary School students will get a close-up look at the fire department’s big aerial truck Tuesday when Morenci Fire Department members make their annual Fire Prevention Week visit.
Smoke alarms and fire safety will also be a big part of the visit, said coordinator Jeff Ort.
“We’ll emphasize smoke alarms because they do save lives,” he said. “It would be a really good time to check your smoke alarms at home.”
Ort said that after children learn about the importance of smoke alarms at school, they need to see their parents reinforce the value of the life-saving device at home.
“Show your kids it’s valuable,” he said.
Ort said it’s still common for department members to find dead batteries and inoperable smoke alarms when they’re fighting fires.
The Morenci Fire Department still has smoke alarms to give away to those in need, through a donation from the Morenci Kiwanis Club.
Alarms will be given free and also installed for free, if desired. In addition, department members will install alarms that residents buy on their own.
When at the school next week, department members will show a DVD that demonstrates what it’s really like inside a burning house—not the version that kids might have seen in movies and on television shows.
“It shows how dark it really is in a smoky house, it shows the real dangers involved,” Ort said.
Students will also receive coloring books and magnets promoting fire safety and emergency phone numbers.
