Morenci city council 04.13.11
Morenci city law governing the Sunday sale of liquor by the glass will not change despite changes in state law.
Following the third reading Monday night of a proposed change to the City Code, Morenci city councilor Greg Braun moved to not revise the current ordinance.
Mayor pro tem Tracy Schell explained that council was considering the issue because state law has changed to allow Sunday liquor sales and is requiring local municipalities to decide on the issue.
City administrator/clerk Renée Schroeder read a letter from mayor Keith Pennington who was absent. Pennington urged the council to oppose a change in the ordinance.
“I believe the use of alcohol in our society, while profitable to some, is a detriment to us all,” wrote Pennington. “Our local government should not expand the availability of these products, which enables destructive and sometimes violent behavior.”
“I agree with Mayor Pennington,” said Braun.
Braun’s motion failed because it was not seconded by any of the other councilors present (Schell, Leasa Slocum and Joe Varga).
Varga then moved to revise the code, but that motion also died due to lack of a second.
The current ordinance specifies that alcohol may not be sold “At any time on Sunday for consumption on the premises.” This allows for grocery stores to sell on Sundays with a license, but not bars.
RUBBISH—Renee Schroeder reported that the annual rubbish pick-up is set for July 23, the Saturday after the City-Wide Garage Sales.
